Peter

by Tate

First off I want to say that Peter Morell is completely obsessed with the Georgetown Hoyas.  Sorry, I just thought that you should know that before reading this article.  You might have guessed that the person that influenced him the most was a Georgetown basketball player named Roy Hibbert and his hero is another basketball player named Hollis Thompson who Hannah also likes.

Here is a small change in sports for you.  The person Peter would most like to meet is Dan Schneider so he could give him a piece of his mind.  If you did not already know, he is the owner of the football team the “RedSkins.”  There are a couple of other things you should know about Peter.  He repeats every question that you ask him like “Well, I would have to say that my favorite book and movie would be Alladdin because the songs are so great and I love to sing and my favorite book is The Million Dollar Throw because it is also about basketball my favorite sport.

He also loves to smile which you would figure out a couple minutes after you meet him.  To prove it, he says that he is smiley, energetic and amusing.  His favorite TV show is Sports Center.  Wow! I would have never guessed that! Not!  When I asked him what his what his favorite subject in school was he had some very interesting things to say.  “Spanish is scary, math is intimidating, in science I never get called on, Religion and English Lit are bland, and I never have time for the assignments in social studies, but I usually get it done, so my final answer is none.”  I bet you have a lot of questions for him, huh?

If you want to know some more sports stuff about Peter his favorite sport is…

John is very interested in Lebron James.  His hero, the main influence and the person that he would like to meet the most.  He has a great sense of humor and he likes the Simpsons movie and the TV show “The Office.”

He is not a big Tom Sawyer fan when it comes to books, actually when I asked him what his favoirte book was he said, “Anything but Tom Sawyer.”

He likes PE and he wants to play basketball when he is older.  His pet peeve is being cut by a knife.

He can’t decide when he is the happiest and he was saddest when his grandma died.  He was born July 1st 1998.  He grew up in DC; wants to go to Sweden and had a perfect vacation of going to the Bahamas.  He is happy, joyful and smart, likes playing sports and doesn’t know how he wants to be remembered.

An interview with Christoph
By: Adriana

Christoph was a fun person to interview. He has good taste in movies and books. His pet peeves are people who are annoying and he’s lived in Jamaica, Germany, India and the U.S.A.  I asked Christoph what his favorite subject in school was and he said, “Does gym count as a subject?” He would most like to meet his grandfather. He also likes to make videos and post them on YouTube. He would spend his ideal day in an amusement park.

His favorite TV show is Family Guy, and he spent his favorite vacation in Legoland in Denmark, though he hopes to go to Hawaii some day. I asked Christoph how he would describe himself and he said “annoying, loud, and short.” His parents have influenced him the most. The saddest moment in his life was when his dog died when his house burned down in India. He is 11 years old and wants to be remembered “as the annoying kid who was obsessed with making videos and posting them on YouTube.com.”  (Hopefully he was joking!)

The Shakespeare Workshop Prepares to Perform Julius Caesar

November 18th, 2009

By Macy Rupp

“To be, or not to be, that is the question.”  This is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous quotes.  Today, I sat in on the rehearsal for Julius Caesar.  This 20 minute version of the play will be performed by the Shakespeare Workshop next week during Grandparents and Special Friends Day.  The play has been produced by Upper School Language Arts teacher Mr. Vic Gallerano. Let’s dive into the theater and have a look at the production.
At the beginning of the Workshop, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, the groups of 6th through 8th grade actors go up to Mr. Gallerano’s classroom and enjoy a snack.  Mr. G, as he is known by the kids, says that he doesn’t want the young actors to pass out on stage, which is understandable.
After we enjoyed our snacks, we read over the lines, and once one of the teaching artists from The Shakespeare Company arrived, we headed down to the theater.  This is where it all begins.
If I do say so myself, Mr. G has a very talented group of actors this year.  I enjoyed sitting in on the rehearsal on Thursday because of the talent and energy these young actors had.  And I am very excited for this production.
I sat down to interview the man who makes the Workshop happen – Mr. Gallerano.  I started the interview by asking Mr. G if he had ever been in the theatre before,  “I’m no professional,” he told me “but I acted in high school and college, plus I have been doing Shakespeare Workshop since it started, in 2003.”
The Workshop grew out of the studies of the sixth grade English Literature Class.  He also said that the choice was inspired from about this time, because the sixth grade Social Studies class was studying ancient Rome and Greece; Julius Caesar just fit in.  Since then, the kids have performed a number of different plays including Hamlet and a Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Mr. G likes Julius Caesar because there are many group scenes, which gives everyone a chance to be on stage.  He picked the parts by level of energy.  He said “I tried to put the more extroverted students  in the lead roles, so they would  have a chance to memorize lines and be hams.  Those who are a little more timid are often given smaller roles or places in group scenes, so they have a chance to get more comfortable on stage.  They will be memorizing their lines for the production, and as Mr. G would say you “Can’t act till you’re off the book.”
This year,” Mr. G explained, ” we have a big, talented group of actors.  There really are no problems, the teachers are talented, the young actors are learning, and are having fun.”
Speaking of teachers, the other acting teachers are very talented.  Mr. G’s assistants are from The Shakespeare Company, where they serve as both actors and directors.
This amazing performance will be on Grandparents Day, it is about twenty minutes long.  Grandparents, visitors, some Upper School classes (depending on the teacher) and siblings are invited to this play.  No, there will not be costumes, but who needs costumes with such a great group!  I just can’t wait for Grandparents Day to come to see the expressions on everyone’s faces when they see how talented the actors are.
Next for those interested in Shakespeare, Mr. G will be casting a show with 7th and 8th graders to be performed at the Secondary School Festival this spring at the Folger Library. Students should look for the announcement in the first Tuesday Folder in January.

Interview with Mrs. Burton

November 18th, 2009

Reporters: Hannah Smulson and Lena Gancie

In October we had the pleasure of interviewing the amazing Mrs. Burton, who teaches 5th- 7th grade Social Studies.

She has been teaching at Holy Trinity for 12 years - but not all at once.  The first time she taught for three years, then she left for a while.  When she came back, she stayed for nine whole years!

She likes being a teacher, “If I didn’t, do you think I would be here?” asked Mrs. Burton.

Mrs. Burton thinks that Zeus (her favorite celebrity) will win the Olympics.  “Zeus always wins” she replied with a grin.  For those of you who don’t know, Zeus is her name in the 6th grade Greek city-state project.

She likes plain hot dogs with baked beans.

She always gives open note tests including exams which we all thank her for. Mrs. Burton has lived in 7 different states. Her favorite state is North Carolina.  She would like to visit Colombia.

She has 2 children.  Her daughter, Nerina, works here at HTS and one is still in school. Her hero is her husband who is an officer in the U.S Coast Guard.

Lastly her favorite color is blue like the Virgin Mary!
